My assessment of the past few months is hard to explain. It’s been a hard and exciting time, yet scary too. School started again. School is very boring and I feel like I could learn more being out in the real world than stuck in a classroom all day. One time my teacher my talking about the Jews over in Germany and how they’re being persecuted by Hitler. She said that’s the difference between us and Germany and that alledgedly we don’t persecute anyone. I don’t understand how this can be true though because I overheard her talking at the courthouse and she was talking bad about the colored people. That’s persecuting isn’t it? I tried to ask Jem about it but when I mentioned the courthouse he got real mad at me, so I didn’t bring it up again.
Bob Ewell got fired at his job at the WPA. Atticus said it was from laziness, but Bob blamed it on Atticus. I thought this was somewhat true, but it was Bob Ewell’s fault. He ended up threatening Atticus and it made Jem and I real scared for him. Another thing that added to our fears was that Judge Taylor’s house was almost broken into, but he was home the robber left.
I over heard Atticus talking and I found out that Mr. Ewell was giving Helen a hard time when she walked to Link Deas’ place to work. He told Bob to stop and he did. I thought it was very nice of Mr. Deas to offer Helen a job, seeing as her husband died and she has kids to feed.
Halloween came up and this year there was a pageant. I was to play the part of a ham. The costume was an inconvienced but I consented to wear it. I thought that Atticus and Aunt Alexandra would go watch the play, but they were both too tired so I acted out my part in front of them and Calpurnia. They said I was a very nice ham.
When the pagean night came Jem walked me to the auditorium. On the way there Cecil scared us, it was a good joke. When the play started I sat down on the ground to await my turn to go on stage. I think I fell asleep but I woke up to the band playing and I thought that maybe I could go and catch up with all the rest of them without being noticed. I came out when Mrs. Merriweather was carrying the state flag. Everybody laughed really hard and Mrs. Merriweather made me feel really bad about “ruining her play”.
On the way back from the play something really scary happened. I was wearing my ham costume and Jem and I were walking home in the pitch black dark. Jem heard something and we stopped, then I heard something finally, and we were attacked! Everything was all a blur because I couldn’t see, I kept tripping and I heard Jem yell out. Someone came to help us though and he carried Jem back to our house. Jem had a broken arm; I was alright but bruised up.
I had to explain to Atticus and Sheriff what happened. Sheriff said that Jem didn’t stab Mr. Ewell, but Atticus said he did. I understood what Atticus was saying, but Sheriff finally convinced Atticus that he didn’t.
Then I pointed to the man who had helped us, who was standing in the corner. It was then that I realized it was Boo Radley.
“Hey, Boo,” I said.

TKAM Journal # 4 chap 10- 12
Dear Diary
What a wonderful day that I assumed I was having until some filthy, disturbing children came trotting along the sidewalk. I thought I was having a lovely, inconspicuous day but the children just had to look right up at me. I knew from that point on that life as Mrs. Dubose would never be the same. I always thought to myself why Atticus would let such a beautiful lady's children run around and do what ever they wanted, so now was the time where I ceased the thought and chose to let the kids know how I felt. It most have hurt their feelings because their cheerful expressions seemed to slide right off their faces. The bad part about it is, I'm the type of person that doesn't care what I say or who it hurts and I'm going to forever be that way. Those dirty kids have didn't one thing to please me, so why should I try to please them. I know for a fact the little ugly gurl said something that was inaudible which made me go on and say an even longer speech. I was really getting fired up with saying rude comments to the children. When I said the first rude thing, I just couldn't stopped. I talked about there dad lawing for a nigger and everthing. They kept walking, so I knew I got the better of them because they must have been scared.
When I came back outside I seen the most puzzling thing. My whole garden was tore up and all over the place. I knew it had to be that good for nothing Jeremy Finch. I called his father up as quick as a snap of your finger. I told him to make sure he reports his son to my house as quick as possible because his son contradicted his rules. He went against anything Atticus ever taught him and I needed to discipline him for it. When I talked to Atticus, I tried to be nice because I needed Atticus to let his son come over. I could at least be the one who taught that boy some sense of respect. It could be peril if the boy doesn't learn it sooner than later.
Jeremy reported to my house right quick that afternoon. I told him that he needed to be at my house two hours every week day and Saturdays to read to me for a month. Also, that he needed to help fix my garden back up better than how it was before since he ruined it. He had a cantankerous expression upon his face but i didn't really seem to mind it. He ended up apologizing for his unhuman like behavior and I was so glad he got a little taste of sense in him. I felt very proud with the work I had done.

Journal number 5 (Dill) Chapters- 13-15
I closed my eyes and listened to the conversations around me. I suddenly heard shouting and I heard scout cry out in pain. I suddenly had the overwhelming urge to get out from under scouts bed and help her. I knew that she was only fighting against Jem though. I heard Jem fall down and then Atticus entered the room. “Go to bed” Atticus said. Yes this was his chance. He squeezed his hand out. Then he felt scout step on it. She had been reading and was ready to go to bed. He couldn’t help it, it hurt. He let out a grunt.
She stopped and looked down. Even though she could not see anything in the dark. She turned on the light and went to Jem’s room. Wait! He didn’t want Jem to find him only scout. He was planning that in the middle of the night he would climb into bed with her. She would think it was a dream and then in the morning he would still be there and she would be so happy. Jem came into her room. He could see that he was holding a broom. He stuck it under the bed and hit Dill in the face. Again he didn’t say anything. Dill decided a minute later that it was no use and eventually let him get his arm out. Dill squeezed himself out from under the bed.
Scout was looking at him. She looked like it was the happiest day of her lie. Then dills stomach growled. She realized he was hungry and went to go get him soothing to eat. She came back a minute later with a pan of corn bread. He ate the whole thing he was so hungry. Then Jem did something that he would never forgive him for. “Atticus come here”
How could he do that to Dill. He had never done anything mean to him in his whole life and now he was treating him poorly. Dill thought of this as unacceptable and never thought of Jem the same way again.
